Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, and Yamaha Close Factories Due to Japan Tsunami After Kamchatka Earthquake
TIMEMOMENTS.COM- Following an 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, tsunami waves reached the coastal areas of Japan, Russia, and Hawaii on Wednesday (July 30, 2025).

Euronews reported on July 30, 2025, that the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a warning of waves up to three meters along Hokkaido and Honshu, with waves as high as 1.3 meters recorded in Iwate Prefecture.

Evacuation orders were issued for 1.9 million people in Japan.

The warning has been extended to Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa, while tsunami warnings have also been issued for Hawaii, Alaska, parts of the US west coast, and southern regions as far as New Zealand.

The earthquake in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, recorded at a depth of 18.2 kilometers, caused four-meter-high waves along the Kamchatka coast, injuring several people.

Not only were Japanese residents evacuated, but several Japanese automakers also closed their factories due to the tsunami.

Russian media outlet 32cars reported on July 31, 2025, that Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi had closed their factories due to the tsunami threat following the Kamchatka earthquake.

"The strongest earthquake in decades, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka, widely reported yesterday, has caused concern across the Japanese Pacific region.

Authorities have evacuated approximately 2 million people, and automotive giants Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, and Yamaha have halted operations at their factories and evacuated employees," explained 32cars.

Toyota has closed eight factories along Japan's eastern coast, including its main assembly line.

Nissan has halted production at Iwaki and Oppama, and moved staff at its Yokohama headquarters to upper floors.

Mitsubishi has closed its factory in Okayama, while Suzuki and Yamaha have closed their factories in Kosai and Yajima.

Evacuation was also announced at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant.

Although the massive wave reached 1.3 meters in Hokkaido and Iwate, no damage or casualties were reported—the early warning system introduced after the 2011 disaster had been activated.

After the tsunami threat was lifted, businesses resumed operations.

Japanese authorities noted that strict evacuation protocols and lessons learned from previous disasters helped prevent a tragedy.

In 2011, the tsunami claimed over 19,000 lives — Japan is no longer making the same mistakes.
