China's Modern Submarine Reportedly Passes Through Important Japanese Waters, Raising Concerns

TIMEMOMENTS.COM - A concerning development has been reported regarding China's military activities in the Japanese region.

According to the National Security Journal, on July 31, 2025, a submarine support vessel belonging to the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) was detected in the Tsushima Strait.

This has raised concerns in Japan, particularly in the strategically important region.

The presence of the Chinese submarine is seen as part of a series of naval movements by China in recent weeks.

It was reported that the submarine support vessel, identified by hull number 841, was observed sailing eastward.

Specifically, it was approximately 380 kilometers west of the Goto Islands in Japan. During its voyage, the vessel headed northeast through the Tsushima Strait to enter the Sea of Japan.

It is also worth noting that the day before, a group of PLAN surface ships was seen sailing northeast, approximately 80 kilometers west of the Goto Islands.

This group also passed through the Tsushima Strait to enter the Sea of Japan.

The vessel is identified as the Dakai class, the most modern submarine support and rescue vessel introduced into the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy's fleet.

This class is designed to provide technical, logistical, and operational support for submarines.

Especially during prolonged operations or emergencies at sea. Specifically, hull 841 was identified in this deployment.

It is reported that this submarine will be the second unit of approximately three units forming this class, which began active operations by the end of 2024.

According to Military Zone, on July 31, 2025, it was revealed that China's efforts to cross the Tsushima Strait were considered concerning.

This further reinforces Japan's concerns about the increasing military activities of China in its territory.

The strait is a strategic maritime corridor for the region, so this transit could be interpreted as a presence-marking action aimed at asserting its territorial claims.

The deployment of submarine support vessels reflects an increase in China's operational capabilities and long-range submarine support in the East China Sea, as well as the deployment of attack submarines or ballistic missile submarines in the region.

Earlier reports also indicated that China's stealth fighter jet J-10 “Mighty Dragon” had flown through the Tsushima Strait.

In a significant and provocative show of force, China revealed that its stealth fighter jet J-20 “Mighty Dragon” had flown through the tightly monitored Tsushima Strait near Japan, apparently undetected.

According to an initial report this week from the South China Morning Post (SCMP), China's state broadcaster reported this week that the First Fighter Brigade, which includes J-20 fighter jets, flew the aircraft on a mission over the Bashi Strait and Tsushima Strait and conducted patrols around Taiwan.
