Competing with ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi's Offer, PT PAL Designs Aircraft Carrier for Indonesian Military

PT PAL's Aircraft Carrier Design

TIMEMOMENTS.COM - Some time ago, Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri submitted a proposal to the Indonesian government regarding plans to acquire the aircraft carrier ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi.

The Garibaldi has been decommissioned from the Italian Navy after its role was replaced by the ITS Trieste.

Indonesia's plan to operate an aircraft carrier presents a unique challenge for this archipelagic nation.

With a coastline stretching 99,083 kilometers, Indonesia must operate an aircraft carrier of the Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) type.

The planned role of Indonesia's LHD ships is for logistical support operations following natural disasters and military operations.

For military operations, the aircraft carrier will be equipped with helicopters and combat drones.

As is known, Indonesia has ordered TB2 Bayraktar drones from Turkey.

Additionally, in the future, Indonesia is interested in operating heavy attack drones, the Kizilelma, also from Turkey.

Both types of drones are designed to operate from LHD aircraft carriers.

Currently, Indonesia is observing the operation of TB2 drones from Turkey's Anadolu-class aircraft carrier.

Turkey has conducted multiple tests of drone landings and takeoffs from the Anadolu-class carrier.

The results are not yet known for certain, but in the future, Ankara will operate drones from aircraft carriers, a method Indonesia aims to adopt.

There is also a very high likelihood that Indonesia will operate more than one LHD unit in the future.

This opportunity will not be overlooked by shipyards worldwide.

For instance, Navantia is ready to propose the LHD Juan Carlos I alongside the Canberra class.

South Korea also has the Dokdo class.

Turkey is also prepared to offer the Anadolu class to Indonesia, accompanied by various defense cooperation opportunities that are currently closely intertwined.

So, are domestic shipyards in Indonesia unwilling to participate in this offer?

Of course there are, namely Indonesia's national warship shipyard, PT PAL, which is preparing to design a new LHD to meet the navy's needs.

This serves as an alternative if Indonesia decides not to purchase the Garibaldi or to add more than one LHD unit.

However, PT PAL is said to be collaborating with other shipbuilding companies.

"Although there is interest in the Garibaldi, alternative proposals are still under discussion.

The state-owned shipbuilder, PT PAL Indonesia, has offered to develop a helicopter carrier or amphibious assault ship domestically, possibly in partnership with Fincantieri or Hyundai Heavy Industries," reported Army Recognition on July 29, 2025.

It is known that in recent years, Indonesian government delegations have visited naval shipyards in various countries.***
