Indonesia Does Not Want ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi to End Up Like Thailand's HTMS Chakri Naruebet

TIMEMOMENTS.COM - Indonesia is still in the process of further exploration with Fincantieri regarding the acquisition of the ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi aircraft carrier.

Indonesia is still studying the concept and operations of Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) aircraft carriers.

Because all military equipment purchased must be suitable for its intended purpose.

Indonesia's goal in purchasing an LHD has two objectives.

First, as a non-combat element used to deliver aid following natural disasters.

Second, as a combat element in military operations.

The second point is clearly prioritized because, by nature, an LHD is a warship.

Given Indonesia's geographical conditions, consisting of thousands of islands, its navy should have an LHD.

The LHD's ability to carry various combat equipment and a large number of Marine troops in a highly mobile manner is a characteristic of the military operations Indonesia desires.

The ability to move a large number of troops in a highly mobile manner enables Indonesia to respond quickly to threats, whether they originate from within or outside the country.

The same concept is also implemented by fellow ASEAN member Thailand.

Thailand was the first ASEAN country to operate an aircraft carrier, the HTMS Chakri Naruebet.

Thailand purchased this aircraft carrier brand-new from the Bazan shipyard in Spain.

Chakri began active service on March 27, 1997.

The Chakri was capable of carrying and operating fighter jets such as the AV-8 Harrier II.

However, under Thai control, it took only two years—specifically by 1999—for the entire fleet of Vertical or Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL) fighter jets to be removed from operational service on the HTMS Chakri Naruebet.

The loss of its primary capability to operate fighter jets left the aircraft carrier largely idle at its base in Sattahip, only leaving port to provide logistical support following natural disasters.

However, Chakri recently found its purpose again by participating in the Trat Pikhat Pairee 1 military operation.

Alongside other Thai naval warships, the HTMS Chakri Naruebet set sail toward Cambodian waters.

"The Royal Thai Navy then launched Operation Trat Pikhat Pairee 1 (Trat Strike 1) to repel Cambodian forces that had invaded three points along the Thai border.

At 05:40, the Thai Navy successfully repelled the Cambodian forces," explained National Thailand on July 26, 2025.

Learning from Thailand's experience in operating an aircraft carrier, Indonesia is reluctant to repeat the operational mistakes of the Chakri Naruebet.

Jakarta will detail as much as possible so that if it decides to purchase the ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi, it can operate it as optimally as possible.

"Decision-making will consider costs, industrial participation, operational requirements, and logistical sustainability.

Analysts note the precedent of Thailand's HTMS Chakri Naruebet, a light aircraft carrier with limited utility due to budget constraints, as a case study.

Some experts argue that an additional LHD or multi-role support ship could provide greater operational flexibility," explained Army Recognition on July 29, 2025.

In the coming years, Indonesia will continue to refine its methods for operating LHD aircraft carriers.***
