Defense Analyst Reveals Indonesia Finds Cost Effective Solution by Purchasing 48 KAAN and 50 KF-21 Boramae

Indonesia is deemed appropriate in acquiring the KAAN and KF-21 Boramae

TIMEMOMENTS.COM - Indonesia's defense budget is not as large as other countries, but who would have thought that Jakarta is ambitious enough to have two fighter jet projects, the KF-21 Boramae and KAAN.

Turkey and South Korea are Indonesia's partners in developing these fighter jets.

However, on the South Korean side, the development of the KF-21 Boramae with Indonesia has encountered some challenges.

Recently, South Korea's intelligence agency accused Indonesian engineers of stealing KF-21 Boramae data from the development center of Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) in Sacheon.

On the other hand, Indonesia has reduced its contribution to the KF-21 Boramae development program by a certain percentage, prompting Seoul to automatically reduce the technology transfer for the fighter jet as well.

Nevertheless, the program continues with Indonesia remaining a development partner for the KF-21 Boramae.

In line with this, Indonesia has chosen to join Turkey's KAAN program.

Turkish Aerospace Industries (Tusas), the developer of KAAN, welcomed Indonesia's participation in the program with open arms.

Tusas has even opened a branch office in Indonesia, specifically in Bandung, West Java, under the name Turkish Aerospace Indonesia.

"PT. Turkish Aerospace Indonesia is registered with three main core businesses: Wholesale and Spare Parts Trading, Design and Engineering for aircraft, and Research and Development related to technology and engineering for aircraft parts.

Wholesale and Spare Parts Trading: Selling products from Turkish Aerospace such as helicopters, airplanes, UAVs, and space systems," explained tusas.co.id.

The opening of this branch office is reportedly due to the growing defense ties between Indonesia and Turkey.

Not only with Tusas, the Indonesian government has also partnered with Havelsan, Roketsan, and Aselsan for the development of its defense systems.

Indonesia views Turkey's defense industry as a model worth emulating domestically.

Therefore, the purchase of 48 KAAN units is a manifestation of Indonesia's ambition to independently produce its own fifth-generation fighter jets in the future.

According to defense analyst Harpreet Sidhu from Global Data, Indonesia's approach is a cost-effective solution for building its defense system.

The purchase of 48 KAAN and 50 KF-21 Boramae is acknowledged as appropriate, despite ongoing funding shortages.

"The signing of the KAAN agreement simultaneously with Turkey introduces a new variable into Indonesia's fighter jet development roadmap.

With a defense budget still below 1% of GDP, it is increasingly difficult to envision how the country can realistically fund two major fighter jet programs simultaneously.

This dual-track strategy could reshape Indonesia's defense procurement ambitions and broader industrial participation," Sidhu explained, as quoted by Asia Pacific Defense Reporter on July 29, 2025.

Indonesia's ambitions are clearly evident in the simultaneous procurement of the KAAN and KF-21 Boramae, though technical maintenance must be carefully managed to ensure the equipment remains combat-ready.***
