Russia Angry at Japan for Making One Request, But Not Because of Earthquakes, Tsunamis, or War

TIMEMOMENTS.COM-

Although the earthquake in Russia recently triggered a tsunami in Japanese waters, the two countries are now at odds.

It is not because of the earthquake, tsunami, or the development of threatening weapons, but rather because of a request for the return of goods.

According to Kyodo News on July 31, 2025, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 31st that the Japanese Consulate General in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk had requested the return of the Kinkakuji-Golden Pavilion model, which has been on display since 2001 at the State Academic Library in Sakhalin, Russia's Far East.

The ministry stated that on July 25, it had informed the Japanese Embassy in Moscow that it was “surprised by the unusual request.”

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it was not convinced that Japan's request would create a conducive environment for the activities of the Japanese Consulate General, and would not contribute to the restoration of Japan's positive image as the “Land of the Rising Sun,” which had been lost in Russia due to Japan's unfriendly policies.

In response to Japan's demands, Russian media outlet News.ru reported on July 31, 2025, that the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had sent an official statement to the Japanese Embassy in Moscow regarding the incident related to the request to return the exhibition.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Japanese authorities are using what is referred to as the “Russia factor” to explain their domestic political issues.

According to her, Tokyo is mimicking Washington's approach by making baseless accusations about Moscow's interference in the electoral process.

The recent election for the upper house of the Japanese parliament was won by politician Muneo Suzuki, known for his pro-Russian views.

He was previously a member of the House of Representatives but left the Japan Restoration Party after facing criticism over his visit to Moscow.
